A Roadmap to PICC Quality Improvement
Quality Improvement is a journey: and for all journeys, we must start at the beginning. When developing a quality improvement strategy for PICC performance the Improve PICC team developed a two-tiered comprehensive approach outlined below. Tier I encompasses steps that establish strong foundations for PICC performance: developing an effective vascular access committee, and developing a comprehensive understanding of PICC appropriateness. Once mastery of steps in Tier I has been achieved, Tier II will provide more targeted strategies to address specific PICC complications. Tier II steps are resource heavy and time intensive, but paired with the foundations established in Tier I, allow for continued growth in the PICC sphere.
HMS PICC Toolkits
The HMS PICC Toolkits were developed to provide users with a comprehensive guide to follow evidence-based recommendations to improve PICC performance at their individual hospitals.
Tier I Toolkit
Tier 1 of the toolkit focuses on global strategies to improve PICC safety.
Tier II Toolkit
Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) are known to be associated with complications, but how institutions can enact changes and policy to prevent adverse outcomes is less well known. In response, the Improve PICC team has developed strategies to implement plans to reduce complications. Each strategy, targeted towards addressing a specific complication, includes various steps. Each step includes a data gathering phase and a validation phase, where practices are compared to best practice and evidence. The steps are sequential so that the least resource consuming, most pragmatic and easiest to implement steps are early; the more costlier and time-consuming steps are later.
